What’s more elemental than fire? While it provides illumination and warmth that keeps the darkness at bay, it also must be contained. Is it this contradiction that makes watching a flame so transporting and mesmerizing? A candle will provide the fire, and a candle holder contains and focuses that fire into a source of spiritual warmth. The Danish put great importance on candles as part of what they call “Hygge”, pronounced “hoo-ga”, that loosely translates as coziness and comfortable conviviality. Lighting candles is a way to make our homes more intimate, softer and inviting, creating spaces for friends and family to gather. Even without the company, how I enjoy on a cold winter night, to light a few candles, curl up on the couch with a cup of tea (or whiskey!) and a good book.
